From Darkness to Light, Part 2

Margarita discovers hope and joy through Bible truths.

Flyers had gone out. Invitations had been whispered from neighbor to neighbor. The Seventh-day Adventist church in Unión Valle was holding an evangelistic campaign—and I had determined that I would be there, no matter what.

The first night, the speaker preached a powerful message. I listened carefully, and it touched me deeply. The Bible came alive! I felt like a sponge soaking up water after a long drought. As I walked out that evening, I knew that I wanted to return for each of the following meetings.

Over the course of the multi-week evangelistic campaign, the speaker went over each doctrine of the Bible. Once that series was complete, a Bible worker began to visit my home regularly. We studied each Bible topic together again more in depth—the Sabbath, the state of the dead, and others. When I learned that people don’t go to heaven or hell when they die and that hell is not a place where God burns people throughout eternity, it made so much sense. It helped me understand our great God and His love toward me.

After we finished the Bible studies, the Bible worker asked me once more if I still wanted to be baptized. My answer was a resounding “Yes!” Despite my poor health, this was the most important and desired decision of my life.

In addition to the blessing of the beautiful Bible truths I learned, my sister’s healthy meals also began to take effect on my body. My health improved steadily—not all at once, but noticeably. I started walking again without help. My blood sugar levels stabilized. I carefully took my insulin and medications, remembering that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

The day of my baptism was a tremendous blessing—not only for myself and my family, but even for the church, who had been so supportive all along the way. The congregation murmured quietly as I, who had been bedridden just a few months before, stepped into the water with the help of two deacons. I saw tears streaming down faces as the pastor gently lowered me into the pool. When I emerged from baptism and the congregation broke into singing, I felt radiant!

I now attend church every Sabbath morning. Although it is far from our home, my nephew Franco— who is not yet an Adventist—faithfully transports me there and back on his motorcycle. He always keeps a close eye on me and takes such good care of me.

I know I am not always easy to get along with—my character has flaws. But I also know that Jesus has the power to transform those un-Christlike traits in me. I have chosen to walk with Him, and by God’s grace, I know that He will take me to heaven someday.

Today, I am filled with gratitude. I am determined to restore my health with the help of my Creator. I am praying for my nephew Franco to attend church and for many of my friends to discover the same hope that the Lord has given me.
