Falling in Love With the Right One

After many years of heartache, a woman falls in love with Jesus.

At 26 years old, I fell in love with Diego. We were like many other young couples of today: I found myself pregnant, and we moved in together. For a time, we lived in the city of Cali, but I grew homesick. I missed my mother, who lived in La Unión, Valle. I also felt confused about my life and realized that I knew very little about Diego after all. Meanwhile, I learned through Doris, Diego’s mother, about the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She encouraged us to marry. Although I still felt perplexed, I accepted, and Diego supported me. We married, and then moved to La Unión, Valle—but my difficult journey had only begun.

After a year and a half of marriage, my problems with Diego began. I sought closeness with him, but he did not return my affection and grew increasingly distant. Months passed, and I felt repeatedly rejected. With my marriage in trouble, I made a big mistake—I formed an emotional attachment to a male friend. Our conversations were saved to my social media, and one day, Diego discovered them. This became a breaking point, and Diego left for good. My marriage had failed.

After some time, I discovered that Diego had been unfaithful to me with another woman. Because of Diego’s family association with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, I allowed myself to drift away. Doris prayed a lot for my son, Oscar, and hoped that things would change for us. For the next ten years, I went through several denominations and three relationships, trying to fill an impossible void in my life and damaging my mental health along the way.

During one of our regular visits to Doris, Oscar and I learned of an evangelistic campaign at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in La Cumbre, Valle. I had heard of the campaign’s speaker—Bible worker Juvenal, who worked in the area where I lived.

When Juvenal began the evangelistic meetings, the subjects he spoke about were related to mental health. He emphasized that only Christ could heal my heart, that only Jesus could fill the emptiness I felt. When I returned to La Unión, I joined the Adventist group there. After several weeks, I decided to give my life to the Lord Jesus and was baptized.

I must be honest—I still struggle. I am in the process of healing and learning more about the foundational teaching of the Scriptures, but I have an excellent teacher in Juvenal. He makes the Bible so clear that I fall in love with Jesus more at every study. I have many questions, and at times I feel unsettled. But I know that I need to stay connected with my Creator every day, move forward step by step, and guide my son Oscar in the right way.
