Fifty-Five Years in Darkness
A landowner is motivated by money . . . until he finds the Pearl of Great Price.
Rap-rap. A knock woke me from my afternoon nap. I opened the door and saw two gentlemen dressed in suits. After talking with them, I learned that they were Seventh-day Adventists who wanted to rent one of my properties. “We wish to use your land as a venue for an evangelistic campaign,” one of them explained.
Having been raised in the Roman Catholic Church, I didn’t know anything about evangelism: I was only interested in the money the men offered for rent. We made the agreement, and then, after a short prayer, one of my visitors handed me an invitation with the whisper, “Don’t miss out!”
I attended the first meeting—just to see what was happening on my land. The preacher was so dynamic in explaining the Bible’s teachings that I became fascinated. When I returned home that evening, I encouraged my family to attend the next meeting with me—and immediately met with resistance. As I tried to convince them, a team of four young people providentially came to our door with a second invitation. “We are here to invite you to the Bible study meetings at Kibonwa Trading Center,” they said, full of smiles.
Their visit made a difference. My children marveled at the keen intelligence and sharp attire of our young visitors. And that evening, only my wife stayed home.

Bible study both enriched and challenged me. I realized that for 55 years, I had walked in spiritual darkness. I was shocked to discover that Saturday is the seventh day—not the sixth. I realized the importance of keeping God’s commandments and learned the truth about baptism by immersion. After studying, I decided to change my life’s direction. Although my wife never attended a meeting, my children and I were baptized along with 70 others—and a new church was born.
We received a donation of about 70 plastic chairs, two tables, and floor mats for our meeting place, and Mr. Onysmus, a Bible worker, followed up on interests in our community.
My wife became very upset when we chose to become Seventh-day Adventists. One day, she told us that she regarded us as dead and tried to commit suicide. Spiritual battles felt very real that day. All through the night, we guarded her and prayed for her conversion.
Please pray for all of us. No matter how strong or painful the opposition may be, I have purposed to be a disciple of Jesus, and I must preach this gospel.
