The Peace of Jesus
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9).
Isaiah described Jesus as “the Prince of Peace.” As Heaven’s Prince, He came to Earth to restore the peace that sin had taken away. Romans 5:1 reminds us, “Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Peace with God can be received only through confession of our sins and faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice. When the grace and peace of Jesus fill our hearts, the sins we once cherished become detestable to us, and we no longer feel bitterness to those who have wronged us. Instead, we see them as individuals whom Christ died to save. “He who is at peace with God and his fellow men cannot be made miserable.” Mount of Blessing, 28. When the gospel of peace takes root in our hearts, envy, hatred, and suspicions vanish. Heaven’s peace brings contentment and supplants our desire for worldly approval.
Once, a wealthy man wished to commission a painting that would perfectly portray peace, and he invited artists from around the region to submit their works. Many of the paintings depicted serene landscapes—towering mountains, still waters, or sheep grazing in a quiet meadow.
The final painting, however, was quite different. The picture showed a raging storm. Dark clouds obscured the sun, and fierce lightning split the sky. A violent waterfall crashed over jagged rocks.
Yet, as the wealthy man looked closer, he noticed something remarkable. In the crevice of a rock, near the waterfall, grew a small bush. Nestled within its branches was a tiny bird, sitting calmly on her nest. Despite the storm raging around her, the bird sat quietly, completely at peace, sheltered by the rock.
May the peace that surpasses all understanding fill our hearts every day!
