Surprise on the Riverbank
An angry wife reacts to her husband’s conversion.
Anitah shouted and murmured as she threw the 20-liter water container to the ground. It shattered into pieces. She angrily advanced toward the pastor, who happened to be in the water with the baptismal candidates.
The church deacons intercepted her. They suspected that she was mentally ill or demon possessed and feared that she would harm the pastor. After they led her away and calmed her down, they asked why she had been so angry.
Anita shared her story with them. Her husband had been studying the Bible with a man named Rodgers, a global mission pioneer serving in the Buhweju hills of Southwestern Uganda. While her husband had talked about abandoning their long-practiced family religion, Anitah did not expect this to materialize. When Anitah went to fetch water at the river that Saturday morning, she saw her husband in the water about to be baptized into his new faith. Alarmed, she made one desperate attempt to prevent his baptism before the deacons intercepted her.
The four years that followed that day on the riverbank were difficult ones for Anitah’s husband Jonan. Anitah deliberately ignored his pleas to join him for Bible study with Rodgers. But despite her hostility toward the teachings of the Bible, the Holy Spirit was working His way into her heart.
The tremendous change in her husband’s behavior, coupled with their financial improvement and other developments at home, gradually softened Anitah’s heart! Jonan was no longer wasting money drinking alcohol, and his mind was now clear to concentrate on nurturing his family.
“How is it that we experiencing blessings after his baptism?” Anita whispered to herself. “God must have a hand in this.” Eventually she opened her heart to Bible study and whenever members invited her to church, she responded positively.
Anitah spent a full year in the valley of decision where she struggled with conviction. At last, after consistent Bible study with Rodgers, she gave up! The conviction in her heart was strong, and soon she too found herself climbing the riverbank to rejoice in her new baptism.
Rodgers is a vibrant, eloquent, committed, prayerful, and faithful Bible worker serving as a global pioneer in Buhweju, Uganda. His magnetic personality and his dependence on God have attracted many to Christ. His church’s rented room is filled on Sabbath mornings!
With support from Mission Projects International Ministry, the congregation has purchased a plot of land where they plan to construct a church building. Meanwhile, Rodgers and the congregation meet to mold bricks for walls. With hearts of thankfulness, the members say: “We don’t have money, but God has given us energy to work for him.”
