Letter from Mike: Venezuelan Refugees – January 2023

“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?… ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:37-40, NKJV.

When we make it our responsibility to help others who are hurting or in difficult situations, we are imitating Jesus; and as we reflect His character, we will feel as He does toward those in need. Jesus didn’t simply feel sorry for people in distress. He had compassion on them, and His compassion led Him to relieve their suffering.

In Ecuador, Patty Gomez took notice of the hundreds of Venezuelans fleeing their native homeland because of the economic collapse of their repressive government. Leaving the instability of their homes, many chose to walk hundreds of miles to Ecuador, thinking to find a better life. They carried only the bare essentials with them: a little food, and sometimes only the clothing they wore. Many went without shoes or other necessities.

Patty felt that something needed to be done for these people, but what could one person do in a massive crisis? Taking the situation to the Lord in prayer, she poured out her soul to God for wisdom and guidance, and she felt impressed to move forward, believing that God would provide. With the little resources she had, she started a small ministry to help these desperate wanderers. Then, a few months ago, she reached out to Mission Projects International, asking for additional funds to feed and clothe these casualties of an oppressive government. We started to send her funds to help relieve some of these destitute vagabonds.

Through the kindness shown them, many Venezuelan refugees have opened their hearts to receive Jesus as their personal Savior! In relieving their misery, a door of opportunity has opened for Patty and her team to share the Three Angels’ Messages with these people. Many Bible studies and Spirit of Prophecy books have been given to them so they may find real hope! Dozens of people are now studying the Bible with Patty and the other lay workers from the church. Many are receiving Bible truth with open hearts. The Holy Spirit is bringing real comfort and joy amidst their circumstances!

With the available resources, Patty can feed and clothe many, but more refugees continue to arrive daily—meaning there are scores of needy souls whom she cannot help because of lack of funds. Please pray for these poor, despairing people from Venezuela! If you would like to relieve the suffering of the Venezuelan migrants, please mark your gifts “Ecuador Evangelism.”

Yours in helping those in need!
